About the Friary Guildford Band
The Friary Guildford Band was founded in 1983 with initial support from the Friary Meux brewery. The band comprises 28 amateur musicians under the musical direction of Chris King, formerly Bandmaster of the Band of the Grenadier Guards.
Six years ago, Friary Guildford Band became First Section National Champion Band, the first band from London & Southern Counties ever to have won this title, earning promotion to the Championship Section of brass banding. The Band has since qualified for the finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall in each of the past four years, one of only ten bands in the UK to achieve this.
The band has made a number of appearances on BBC Radio 2's Listen to the Band and is currently ranked as one of the top brass bands in the world.
About the concert
We are fortunate that the Friary Guildford Band will be taking an evening out of their intense rehearsal schedule as they prepare to defend their title of the Champion Brass Band in London and the Southern Counties - a title they've held for the last two consecutive years.
The Friary Guildford Band performance in Cranleigh will feature a range of popular music from the shows: from Broadway to the West End and will also include other well-known solos and classics, showcasing the musical versatility of this incredibly impressive brass band.
