Who are the Cranleigh Lions?
The Cranleigh & District Lions Club was formed in 1974 and we’re pleased to still have two of the founders as active members.
Our aim is primarily to support the less fortunate in our community and also support national and international Lions appeals and projects.
Cranleigh Lions is a member club of the Lions Clubs International, created in 1917 and now with 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members worldwide. In the UK Lions clubs are grouped together in what is known as Multiple District 105 (or MD 105), which was set up in March 1950. Cranleigh Lions are in the 105 SE District, which one of the districts forming MD 105.
We run a number of events during the year to raise money, which supports local charities and individuals. In the 12 months since the 2010 bonfire and fireworks the Cranleigh Lions distributed £42,039 amongst local causes and people. You can find out more about where the money goes.
The members of Cranleigh Lions cover a wide age range with different professions, some now retired, and all join to put something back into their local community, which they achieve, making new friends and enjoying the experience. It’s a credit to the growing Lions club in Cranleigh that few leave the club and many have been members for more than a decade.
All proceeds from the events we run go into the local community and Lions appeals and projects. Administrative costs are paid for by members, partly from the club subscription, currently £30 every 6 months.
Cranleigh Lions have a monthly “business meeting” at the Cranleigh Village Sports & Social Club in Parsonage Road, where we discuss upcoming events and applications for support. Each event has a committee that organises and runs the event, relying on the other members as necessary leading up to and on the day of the event.
It’s not all hard work though. We have regular social events throughout the year, “Charter Night”, which is a celebration of the forming of the club, “Changeover Night”, where the new club president takes over and a Christmas meal.
If this sounds like an organisation you would like to join or help, find out about joining the Cranleigh Lions by contacting our secretary.
